Hello Linke, you described successfully that the components of opening teaching are autonomy, active participation, and exploration. You also gave us suggestion on the direction of the problems to be designed in the upcoming learning resource. However, I kind of disagree with the point that opening teaching method aligns well with Western female composers. In my understanding, the subtopics are determined after identifying the misconceptions, which presented in the opening sections of blueprint. Therefore, our current topic is not that open-ended. For instance, there are literally hundreds of subtopics under the realm of Western female composers. While most students may be familiar with some subtopics, they may not fully understand others, leading to misconceptions. It is not that necessary for students to explore the subtopics they already know either by active participation or by autonomy.
Hello Caitlyn. Your post covers how the dimensions of direct instruction could be applied in our project specifically. Mostly, I agree that the five principles of direct instruction (1) task-centered; (2) activation; (3) demonstration; (4) application; and (5) integration could align well with our project. Just a friendly reminder: our group may not be able to cover all five principles. For instance, analysis for musical examples and compositions belongs to demonstration and application principles. Yet, this form of analysis may not be implemented easily in the platform, such as BrightSpace and WordPress. The issue of trade-off matters in our works.
